James Lawless is an Irish novelist, short story writer and poet who was born in the Liberties of Dublin. He is an arts graduate of University College Dublin and has an MA in Communications from Dublin City University. He taught in a secondary school and lectured for a number of years and volunteered for a time in the Simon community,〔(Dublin Simon Community )〕 which informed the social concerns in some of his work.〔A review of ''The Avenue'' as a critique of social ills and suburban decay (''Sunday Business Post'', 25-04-10). A review of Lawless' short story ''Brown Brick'' as a metaphor of drug addiction from the anthology ''Let's be alone together'' (''Irish Times'',11-10-08)〕 At the age of six he moved with his family to Walkinstown, a suburb of Dublin, to live not far from the childhood home of the Hollywood actor, writer and Irish cultural ambassador Gabriel Byrne who wrote highly of Lawless' first novel ''Peeling Oranges'' (2007). Lawless divides his time now between County Kildare and West Cork. ==Awards== Awards include the Scintilla Welsh Open Poetry〔(Scintilla Welsh Open Poetry )〕 competition in 2002 and the Cecil Day-Lewis Play Award in 2005 for ''What Are Neighbours For''? His story ''Jolt'' was shortlisted for the Willesden Prize and appeared in ''New Short Stories 1'', edited by Zadie Smith.〔London/ New York, Willesden Herald, 2007.〕 He received an arts' bursary award in 2009 and a Hennessy award nomination in 2010.〔''Sunday Tribune'', 11-04-10.
